Book description

The grasp of neuroanatomy, maybe more than in other organ systems, is closely related to function, neurophysiology and neuro-biochemistry. Its understanding requires a working knowledge of the pivotal neuro-embryological events as well as a working knowledge of general anatomy. For these reasons, it remains one of the greatest challenges encountered during medical studies, both for the aspiring student and for the dedicated mentor. The span of books used as references in teaching neuroanatomy is either too detailed or too simplistic in their attempt to balance the time constraints against the key points for each subject. In addition, since the neurosciences are at the forefront of research, many of the textbooks are written by researchers rather than clinicians, and as a result they tend to suffer a lack of clinical focus. This book, written by a tutor of neuroanatomy and a practicing neurosurgeon, attempts to offer a better balance and a more useful formula. This book is composed for the medical student, relying on comments from past medical students.

The book begins with an introduction chapter which discusses the organization of the nervous system, anatomical planes, introduction to neuro-embryology, as well as relevant scalp and skull anatomy. The next succeeding six chapters discuss the central nervous system regionally. Each chapter begins with the key embryological processes that shape the anatomy and function of that region. The gross anatomical description is followed by a short discussion of microscopic anatomy, gray and white matter anatomical features, major connections and key clinical correlations. First, The spinal cord and the organization of the somatomotor and somatosensory systems are presented, accompanied with a short overview of the peripheral nervous system. The brainstem is examined next with a special subchapter presenting a synopsis of cranial nerves. The diencephalon and the third ventricle are then presented together, followed by a focused review of the basal ganglia and the cerebellum, each presented in separate chapters. A discussion about the cerebrum and the cerebral cortex follows, including a short review of the laminar and columnar cortical organization concepts, the limbic system and higher order cerebral functions, including a discussion about memory and memory disorders, as well as dominant hemisphere clinical syndromes.

The next three chapters tackle specific problematic topics separately. The meninges, the cerebrospinal fluid and the lateral ventricles are discussed first, followed by an overview of the cerebral blood supply. A unique chapter focusing on specific skull base complex structures, such as the cavernous sinus region, the sphenoid sinus, and the jugular foramen is subsequently presented. The book ends with two chapters presenting the special sensory senses, vision and audition. These chapters are organized in a system rather than in regional anatomy forms, with an in-depth discussion of related anatomical features.

Book Abstract

This book has been designed to cover all fields of Neurosurgery and is aimed at serving and guiding the Neurosurgical resident through the residency and training process, as well as to function as a reference and as an accessible source of information for senior neurosurgeons. Neurosurgery is an extremely diverse subject, having enormous amount of knowledge and skills unique to each field of the profession as well as pivotal, time-honoured classical knowledge and techniques serving many fields. All should be familiar and some should be known thoroughly to the Neurosurgical resident. The topics have been carefully selected and there are 28 chapters which cover the entire spectrum of general neurosurgical techniques and knowledge, applicable neuroanatomy, neuropathology and neurophysiology and important highlighted issues from the different subspecialties. The individual chapters provide extensive knowledge needed in that particular topic. The latest information available in the literature from various clinical guidelines, trials and reviews has been incorporated into each chapter. A basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology, neuroanatomy, neurology and neurophysiology is assumed, and serves as a pre-requirement to truly profit and gain from this book. The Author presents this book as the product of his own active training process, hoping to ease the way to other colleagues and help promote knowledge and skills in newer generations of Neurosurgeons.

Back Cover matter

"Focused Neurosurgery" reflects the labor of a 7 years residency in neurosurgery. Our Profession presents a delicate balance of traditional classical knowledge, theories and approaches, which should be known and studied by current day neurosurgical residents and current literature describing evidence based medicine, molecular, conceptual and device related advances. We present a focused classical & up to date Neurosurgical general overview for the inquisitive medical student, resident and senior neurosurgeon.

The Author, Or Cohen-Inbar has been the chief resident at the famous department of neurosurgery at Rambam health care campus in Haifa Israel, a lecturer of Neuroanatomy and neurosurgery at the Technion Israel institute of technology, and an active researcher in the fields of tumor immunology and molecular immunotherapy against malignant gliomas.

Currently, acts as a Clinical instructor of surgical Neuro-Oncology and Radiosurgery at the university of Virginia Health Care System and Gamma Knife Center.
